about that chin-itch
Question:
hey – i just noticed that someone else has the same itch as me. are funny chin-itches a common sign for a pending attack? i know i have about twenty minutes to set up my nebulizer when my chin gets prickly (i noticed that scratching it with the raised lettering on the proventil canister holder in the meantime is soothing…). -julei oop.

I know several asthmatics with such a warning itch. For me, the itchy/tingly area is on my chest, at the base of my neck. A friend of mine experiences the same sensation on the middle of her neck. Susan

I can always tell when my 6 yr. old daughter is going to have an attack. She starts to rub her neck front and back. Patsy

That’s a funny one. (-: (I know, I know, asthma isn’t funny, but hey, you have to take your humor where you can get it sometimes!) I would suspect an itch to be a signal that your level of histamines has gotten too high. I would take Benadryl and see if that helps along with the asthma medication. You don’t have to take the whole 25 mg.; I cut mine up with a pill splitter into 8ths and just take an 8th at bedtime and that’s helped without giving me have a sleep-drugged state the next day. * http://www.concentric.net/~tlshell/ * * En Ring er over dem alle, En Ring kan finde de andre * En Ring kan bringe dem alle, i morket laenke dem alle * I Mordors land, hvor skygger ruge. - JRR Tolkien

Now that you mention it, I get that too. Not that it’s a warning of an attack – rather than just assossiated with it. I seem to get it with an "allergy" type attack – like newly mown grass, rather than an "exercise" attack. Does any-one else get those attacks where you just feel like you lungs are burning on the inside? And coughing feels like your scratching at an already painfull sore? Anyway, that doesn’t happen too often with the good old Ventolin/Becotide/Serevent trio
Take care, Pete (re-post: I wonder where it went the first time?)
Response:
I get the chin itch from time to time. It is usually preceeded by some coughing or tightening of the chest and itchng in my upper chest and neck. By the time the cin-itch happens though, I know a debilitating attack is emminent. Fortunately I got my doctor to prescribe a 2nd nebulizer that I can keep and use at work instead of trying o find someone who could drive me home. About 1 month ago my allergist switched me off of aerobid when I complaimed how it left me feeling tight-chested and short of breath after doing the prescribed 2 puffs. My allergist switched me to flovent and I have not had an attack or needed p-sone. flovent 4x am/pm + serevent 2x pm + flonase 2 squirts both nostrils am + claritin 2xday + sudofed 2xday + fenesin 2400 mg day.

I am posting to this group for the first time, so please be patient if I goof. I too get the itchy chin, with allergy induced attacks, and I always thought I was the only one. I have noticed that holding something cold under my chin/throat (ice bag, cold cloth, cold soda can) as I take my (nebulizer) treatment helps, perhaps it sooths the swelling? I don’t get this particular symptom with exersize induced attacks. Jennifer, Theophylline, Serevent, Intal, Azmacort, Claritin, and last but not least, either Alupent or Ventolin.

Good) writes: I get the same itch just under the chin before an allergy induced asthma attack, also get itchy / tight between the shoulder blades…
AHA! You’re the first person I’ve heard of with the same symptom as I had, which was an intense itching between the shoulder blades in connection with coughing fits. I had this for months following a nasty chest infection. All of my asthma symptoms have been related to infections, but it sounds like this is an allergy symptom. It’s very confusing. Does anyone have any idea why this itching happens? I never had the chin itch, which seems to be alot more common. Cheryl
Response:
I’ve had the chin itch and the spine itch, but only during attacks that were clearly allergic in origin. Shovelling snow in a heavy coat, running in cold weather, anxiety…no itch. I’ve also had the itch/allergy symptoms both when I’d inhaled an allergen (i.e. during pollen/ragweed seasons) and when I’d eaten or ingested an allergen (one or two beers have unpasteurized hope I’m allergic to). I wrote about this in my book Catching My Breath and was frankly hoping for an answer to the itch question from a reader, but so far nothing. Tell us something about your book. Is it personal experiences or ? I have the chin itch sometimes when coughing starts, so far no identified allergies. It is listed as a symptom of impending attack in National Jewish literature.
Response:
YES! I do the same with the proventil cap and thought that I was the only one with that pesky itch!
Response:
Hi I suffer from that chin itch. I keep asking my doctor but he has no idea. I foun that I get the chin itch after I had a coughing spell. I just thought it was due to the stress of the attact. I don’t get the back itch.
Response:
I have that chin itch and back itch…mine will start if I’m in a room with a cat…That’s when I almost rip my neck open just from the scratching….Ouch J

Oh, yes indeed. Somehow "itch" seems a totally inadequate word for that feeling…. Louise Bremner, from grimy Tokyo
