Singulair, cromolyn, and children under 6
Question:
I run a site for parents of asthma kids, which includes an email list and discussion board and have heard many, many cases of kids under 6 being prescribed Singulair. For our part, we tried Singulair this summer for my son (now
when his Vanceril 2×2 no longer seemed to be doing the trick. Unfortunately, my son is in that 1/3 group for whom Singular is no help whatsoever, so after two months we discontinued it. He then dropped Vanceril in favor of Flovent 220 (2×2) which is a high dose but doing wonderful things for him. And it beats the heck out of the evil pred we seemed to need too many times earlier this year. He’s been on Flovent for two months and we’re waiting for his first respiratory virus before we try to wean him down to a lower but still effective dose. Viruses can quickly be near-deadly for my son but wouldn’t you know, when I want one to show up, it won’t.

Response:
My daughter is on Singulair for a month and she is 3 1/2. This asthma stuff is all new to me. She’s had two bad attacks so far this season from a cold. She’s on Albuterol/Xopenex, inhaled flovent and Singulair. Keep me posted. Her pediatrician is treating her.
Response:
A local pharmacist told me (rather matter-of-factly) that it is not unusual for doctors in the Kansas City area to prescribe Singulair to kids as young as two years. Rich – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hello, snip 1) The doctor has prescribed Singulair for her. Even though the company clearly says it is for childern as young as 6, and she is 3, he seems unconcerned. How can I find out if anyone has information about Singulair and 3-year-olds?
