Irritable Bowel Disease Related to Asthma-Inflammation

Question:

Asthma and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) could be caused by the same inflammatory reaction.  People who suffer from (IBS) are twice as likely to have asthmatic symptoms as well.  IBS is a common digestive disorder that produces a range of symptoms including cramps, bloating, and a change/disruption of bowel habits, such as constipation or diarrhea.  The symptoms appear to be due to an increased sensitivity of the bowel, which results in spasm of the bowel muscle.     IBS and Asthma have previously been linked to acid reflux, a condition in which small amounts of acid from the stomach rise up into the gullet, causing intense heartburn. I’ve noticed this connection also. Took lots of antibiotics to reduce GERD and by far inclining the head of my bed ~ 5 inches has helped a great deal. Best wishes.

Question:

I do suffer allergies – quite serious ones and over the years I’ve learnt quite a bit about the biochemistry of allergy etc. Allergic symptoms are varied, but they do have one thing in common – they raise histamine levels in the affected organ (be it lungs, stomach or skin). The symptoms of raised histamine levels are well documented – asthma, inflammation, eczema, hives, excessive nasal mucous, conjunctivitis, vomiting, diarrhoea, migraines etc. The symptoms are usually pretty obvious, and the more you are exposed to the allergen, the worse they get. They are unlikely to be vague symptoms like "feeling a bit tired" or "indigestion" – stress is probably the no.1 cause of these symptoms, but no body ever wants to admit that! For instance, I had an allergic reaction to a luminous green toffee apple in Holland. Within seconds of eating it, my mouth swelled to resemble Mick Jagger, my breathing became noisy, my skin when bright red and covered in a rash and my eyes swelled up so I could hardly see. I then collapsed and was rushed to hospital. Another, less serious reaction was to a "natural" skin cream containing marigold. The aromatherapist smeared a sample on to show me, and immediately it started itching. Within an hour, the skin was read, swollen and weeping. That’s what an allergy is like. Not this hogwash that people keep coming up with. My daughter is allergic or intolerant to milk. She had the worst diarhhoea you have ever seen and taken off the milk she recovered within 24 hours. She didn’t have vague "behavior problems" or seem a bit unwell – she was seriously and obviously *ill*. I know a very tiny number of ADHD people are allergic or intolerant to some things, and show major problems within minutes of eating a certain food, but they really are a minority. When I hear that a child has been "cured" of ADHD because of a special diet I always wonder. Is it the special diet, or is the child more deprived than ADHD and the special diet means he gets more attention? The placebo effect always seems to be forgotten, and yet it can be incredibly powerful. The way to get round it is to sneak the forbidden food into the child’s food without him knowing. If it still has a dramatic effect, that shows it really is the food that’s causing it but people are always unwilling to accept any other explanation because of the implications it might have on them. Don’t do this in the case of anaphylactic reaction (like the toffee apple) however. And is you do discount allergy, remember that is not the end of the road. I had a talk with my sysadmin today and he confirms that it would be REALLY easy to forge messages between these clowns so that they spend LOTS of time jiving each other.  Not only that, but he had this REALLY evil grin when he walked off….

What makes you think we know nothing? What form of chutzpah is that? Burning in chest

My lungs will burn , almost as if they had been dipped in acetone,  when my asthma is not in control. Last summer my inhaled cortisone  intake was increased by Rx.  The problem is in much better control now.   ** In me, burning means lung inflammation.  In you, this may not be  so, I’d pursue this vigorously with your MD if in a day or so this doesn’t go away with your current treatment.  Could ask him about asthma inflammation. : I experience a burning in my chest on those smoggy Los Angeles days. I : have had that experience ever since I was a child growing up in LA. I : am soon moving to a less polluted area. I’m sure the burning was a : result of bronchitis resulting from polllution/irritants. I hope that : helps. : Stu What, you mean people *LIVE* in LA?  Like, wow:-)!.  Whenever I get *near* that hell hole my eyes start burning, I start coughing, and I keep wondering why I can’t see the mountains that are THAT CLOSE!.  A half hour is about all of LA air I can do–just about anyplace is better (except maybe NY or Denver).   Mary

antibiotics and steroids clear it right up.  What I think of as out of control asthma usually ends up being a bronchial infection.  EB

    Has anyone ever experienced a burning sensation in their chest as a result of a lung infection or inflammation? I’ve had asthma & bouts of bronchitis & even pneumonia for ten years but have never felt like my lungs were on fire, as has been the case for the past two weeks. My doctor says it’s bronchitis (did an xray). So far I’m not in trouble (knock on wood), but it’s been very strange and uncomfortable.                           -Paul

        My lung will ach and burn if I’m out in the cold too long. Course I generaly have truble breathing in that time as well. Try soaking in a hot bath, it might help. — Elf-Kin -Every inch of me that is not carnivorous is 100% vegitarian.
