This obviously doesn’t belong in a cancer support forum per se, but it still contains some gross inaccuracies and general misleading that it needs to be addressed for sake of accuracy. NVIC is not to be trusted as a reliable source for vaccine information. They deal with vaccine misinformation. They pretend to be concerned with vaccine safety, but it is clear from their misinformation that their real agenda lies with eliminating vaccines altogether–a highly dangerous and ultimately cynical position because it will logically lead to more children dying, from preventable diseases. I have read the following re: dangers of vaccinations:
I suggest you read some real information rather than the myth and fear-mongering presented here. www.cdc.gov is the most comprehensive and credible source on vaccines and the diseases against which they protect. There have been "reported links between vaccination and dramatic increases in learning and behavior disorders, autism, asthma, diabetes, arthritis, and chronic brain and immune dysfunction" (www.909shot.com/vaxreform.htm).
All of which have been disproved by properly controlled studies correlating rises in incidence and vaccination coverage–i.e. there is no effect of vaccination and rise in incidence rates. The Food and Drug Administration’s Adverse Events Reporting System collected nearly 32,000 reports of adverse reactions following vaccination, with more than 700 deaths in a 39 month period ending in November 1993. The DPT vaccine was associated with more than 12,000 or these reports, including 471 deaths. (source: _American Chiropractor_, Nov/Dec 1994)….
Association does not mean causation; those 471 deaths represent about 12 a month over the 39 months, which may or may not have been vaccine-related. VAERS accepts any and all reports of an adverse event following vaccination, so it cannot be construed as causal. since the FDA reporting system is voluntary, only 10% of actual reactions are ever reported–and the FDA concurs with this figure. Sadly, babies die for any number of reasons, and it can be expected that some will die in the weeks or months following a vaccine. "If vaccinations were to be suspended, the cot death rate [SIDS] would at least be halved" (Scheibner, 1991).
Viera Scheibner is not a credible source: http://www.skeptics.com.au/journal/anti-immune.htm Scheibner has also made claims that shaken baby syndrome is caused by vaccination. I know of no needle that can break ribs or skulls. In fact, this "expert" (a retired geologist) serves to defend in legal cases against shaken baby syndrome. "In one study 70% of SIDS deaths occurred within 3 weeks of DPT vaccinations" (Marion, 1996, p. 1054).
Since SIDS incidence is highest at the same age when vaccines are first given (2-4 months), it is expected that some SIDS deaths will occur after vaccination. More recent studies have shown that DPT vaccination has cut SIDS rates. In 1975, Japan raised the age of vaccination to age 2, and since then there has been a steady decline in sudden infant death syndrome and spinal meningitis (DeSimone; http://gerson.org/healing/articles/nl_vaccinations.html).
Highly inaccurate. When Japan raised DPT vaccine age to 2, they found a huge increase in pertussis with resulting deaths in children under 2. They re-instituted DPT vaccination in infants in 1979, which brought pertussis rates back down. The apparent decrease in SIDS during that time was because there was no vaccine on which to blame it. Babies still died of SIDS. Other studies have shown a 50% decrease in SIDS incidence since the "Back to Sleep" program instituted in the early 1990s–during a time when vaccination coverage increased, not decreased, in several countries including the US and the UK. "New evidence makes a strong case linking autism w/mercury toxicity….the incidence rate of autism soared in the 1990s after the Hepatitis B and Hib vaccines, both containing thimerosal, were made mandatory" (Amy Holmes, M.D. www.healing-arts.org/children/holmes.htm)
The definition of autism also changed significantly during this time, lumping in previously unrelated disorders under an "autism spectrum". This alone will account for a huge amount of the supposed increase. Autism is not a new disease at all. While first clinically described in the 1940s, it has been earlier described in folk tales from the Middle Ages–"changelings", evil spirits that replaced normal babies overnight. It obviously had to occur at a high enough rate back then, to warrant mention in folk tales. Even then, current research places the beginnings of autism well before birth, as a largely genetic disease–with some symptoms apparent (as seen by videotape) well before a baby even comes near a needle. However autism usually isn’t diagnosed until a child is much older, when he/she starts learning to interact with society. Our definition of "normal behavior" is very broad and logically takes into account subtly abnormal behavior. NVIC loves to make the logical error that correlation implies causation. The supposed autism/thimerosal connection will be tested in the next few years because thimerosal by law must be removed from all vaccines given to children. According to a recent survey of the Journal of the American Medical Association, "children receiving the pertussis vaccine were six times more likely to develop asthma than those not receiving the vaccine" (DeSimone, 1998, http://gerson.org/healing/articles/nl_vaccinations2.html). Except that the vaccine used, whole-cell vaccine, is not routinely used now in children–and properly controlled studies show that children who develop the DISEASE pertussis, have a greatly increased risk of asthma. Children vaccinated with pertussis vaccine show no greater asthma incidence compared to an unvaccinated population. The AMA reported that 90% of obstetricians and 70% of pediatricians refused to take the Measles/Mumps/Rubella (MMR) Vaccine (Marion, 1996, p. 1054).

None of these "resources" is credible. What NVIC won’t acknowledge, is that rates of the disease (and resulting injuries and deaths) increase to epidemic proportions every time vaccine coverage drops–this has been shown several times in developed countries. And they also won’t acknowledge that unvaccinated children have a 16-60-fold increased risk of contracting measles–not only that, but also they increase the risk of spreading the disease to vaccinated individuals 2-fold. Vaccination is not always 100% effective–some individuals won’t respond to the vaccine, others can’t have vaccines because of certain chronic illnesses (including cancer) or known vaccine reactions. So far IMHO they haven’t proposed a real alternative to protect these, or all other, children if vaccines were to be eliminated. T.

Fact, as has been demonstrated time and again in western countries like Japan, Sweden and the UK with pertussis, and in the former Soviet Union with diphtheria. Looks like the UK is heading that way again with measles. What is it about ignoring the lessons of history at our peril? NVIC, and you, have yet to address this inconvenient little observation. One highly biased person’s anecdote does not proof make. Do explain, if vaccines don’t work, why the disease rapidly became epidemic within a year after ceasing vaccination in every one of these countries, and please do explain why the incidence dropped right back down when vaccination was reintroduced? "Prior to the latest round of injections, we tested for high antibody titre of the disease agent. None of the patients showed a titre above 3%. After the injections, all patients showed a titre of 97% or higher. After five and ten year followup, no patients reported any adverse reaction." — Thomas Shultz of JABTM So you see, the quotes show different results. How about that Proc IEEE reference John?
