Poor baby, didn’t they have your brand of coffee available?  I doubt that what we are talking about could be construed as brainwashing, I am under a bit of stress, I asked advice, my brother, Todd, proffered it, I accept it, case closed.  Where is your advice?  Criticism I always have in a plentiful supply. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – As for other advice: Mosiah 4:27 and Jarom 1:9.  Talk it over with your family and help each other.  And remember it may not be easy, but it won’t kill you, and if it does oh well life goes on. sorry to jump in at this point but out of curiosity, is this the same blue paperback copie that was given to me at one point in time.  It’s an interesting read but, from my perspective anyway, would benefit from a bit more commentary than what I found in that version.

That would be the one, and your right there is very little commentary included, though there are many people who would be willing to answer any questions about it. — – Todd Rogers "I’ve been asked what I mean by word of honor.  I will tell you.  Place me behind prison walls – walls of stone ever so high, ever so thick, reaching ever so far into the ground – there is a possibility that in some way or another I may escape; but stand me on the floor and draw a chalk line around me and have me give my word of honor never to cross it.  Can I get out of the circle?  No.  Never!  I’d die first!" -Karl G. Thanks.  What I know from living in AZ is that the Mormon church does a lot for the Mormon community.  I don’t know much about what the LDS does for anyone outside the community.  In Kingman, there is a strong network of local churches, but I don’t know how active the LDS was in the network. — Light, Love, & Laughter, Kitten, Goddess of Mischief "Thousands of years ago, cats were worshipped as gods. Ok, I know my daughter is ADHD.  I suspect I am but I have to talk my doctor into it (the diagnosis).  Here’s my problem, I have been trying to stay away from caffeine, not just because I am Mormon, but I get these hellashish cramps if I don’t drink enough water with it.  Well the last two weeks I have lost my inhalers (asthma) twice and had to purchase them outside my insurance.  This is driving me crazy.  I can’t seem to keep track of anything.  Keys, combs, brushes, my glasses,  thank God the kids are old enough so I can’t lose them to.  I know this is driving my hubby nuts.   You should see me in a grocery store, I go back and forth finding the things I need.  Don’t mention lists to me, if I make them I lose them or forget them at home.  This last month has been especially stressful.  My husband got laid off for three weeks, no money for school supplies let alone the rent (got that worked out) or bills.  So I guess I am asking what goes haywire for you guys when you stress and how do you cope?

Dunno how I coped before Chewy came along.  When I’m doing all those things you listed (lost lists, lost keys, lost passcard into the office, etc), Chewy just rolls his eyes at me, then makes me slow down and relax.  It’s a good thing he’s around, ’cause I get sooooo wound up when I can’t find anything. — Light, Love, & Laughter, Kitten, Goddess of Mischief "Thousands of years ago, cats were worshipped as gods. Well what I find is that when I’m stressed I don’t always perform as effectively.  If you’re one of those people take the time to relax and ignore the stress.  Then attack the problems when your calm.  Solving the problems, of course, is one of the best ways to relieve stress. I think I’ll wait and see if these guys follow through.  My experiences with the LDS missionaries has been pretty much the same as for any other evangelical folks:  They talk a good talk but don’t always walk the walk. Response:

* Stress causes the opioids (endorphin, enkephalin, etc.) levels to diminish. The lower opioids levels create a sense of urgency. This sense of urgency is usually expressed as the need to respond to certain physical demands, e.g., if one drinks a couple of quarts of iced tea at 10:00 in the evening, he or she will usually awaken in the middle of the night with a very strong sense of urgency. As soon as the body’s need has been taken care of, the sense of urgency goes away. If the sense of urgency is initiated by continuing stress and there is no way to relieve it, the stress "signal" goes from the opioids to GABA to Norepinephrine to Serotonin to Opioids to, etc. And, a loop occurs. Consequently, there is a continued diminishing of the chemicals until the system’s control of emotions is lost. [The individual first becomes irritable, easily angered and finds him or herself suffering from easy loss of temper. Many find relief in the artificial opioid released by alcohol, tetrahydroisoquinoline, and thus become alcoholics. Others turn to opiates such as heroin, morphine, etc. Some find relief in carbohydrate bingeing. Most, rather noisily, just ruin their careers and their marriages.] * The lowering of the opioids causes an increase in dopamine levels and a decrease in GABA levels. This produces a combination of alertness and anxiety. [The so called adrenaline rush is in large part the feeling of exhilaration caused by the dopamine release. It is exactly the same chemical response as that following a small cocaine use. (i.e. cocaine use causes dopamine to be released in larger amounts than the body requires for normal functioning such as sexual climax or appreciation of beauty.) Continual extra dopamine release causes emotional fatigue which can become debilitating. It can also lead to anhedonia, in which case, he or she can no longer enjoy beauty, music, or even love, in the extreme case. Continuous anxiety from GABA reduction can lead to depression and feelings of inadequacy.] * The lowering of the GABA levels causes the norepinephrine levels to increase and serotonin to decrease. The increase in norepinephrine causes adrenaline to be released and the reduction of serotonin makes sleep difficult to impossible. [It is important to note that serotonin is a sleep enabling neurotransmitter, not a sleep inducing one. A lack of serotonin makes sleep very hard to achieve. Once the serotonin becomes available, the body demands the sleep it now badly needs. When this has been done the person feels rested and fully refreshed. However, if the stress feedback continues, the lack of sleep can cause a great deal of damage to the body.] * The increased norepinephrine encourages a quick, emotional response (e.g. anger) and discourages slower, deliberate (logical) thinking. [The anger released by the lack of the opioids is triggered more rapidly in the presence of the norepinephrine.] * The adrenaline release causes the heart to beat both faster and harder and causes red blood cell reserves to be placed in the blood stream. It causes energy sources, nutrients, and oxygen to be diverted for use by the muscles. This deprives functional organs such as the liver, the digestive tract, etc., from their needed resources. This results in the person being able to make an almost super human (though perhaps illogical) physical response to the threat. [When the heart is required to beat faster and harder over long periods of time, the illness commonly known as

Question:

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Thanks for the quick response. I was given these new meds to try and reduce or hopefully eliminate my need for theophylline, which I have been on for many years. My regular levels on this dose run on the low end of the normal range. Regarding steroid inhalers, I have tried many of them only to have severe side effect of coughing to the point of exacerbation of asthma. This also happens when premedicating with ventolin prior to the use of steroid. I have had relatively good control of my asthma with the rare need for oral steroid therapy and no nebulizer treatment necessary in the past few years. The change in meds is at my request, as I feel that the theophylline is the main cause in my acquiring GERD. I appreciate your comments and will note them for discussion at my next followup with my physician.

Another suggestion, in addition to trying Singulair, is to try the new steroid inhaler Pulmicort Turbuhaler. Its a DPI (dry powder inhaler) hence no propellant. The propellant (or its additives) in some MDIs can cause symptoms in some people. I used to take theophylline at the 600-800 mg/day level; I had trouble with headaches and diarrhea at times. I discontinued it 3yr ago when I started Serevent. Last year I added the TheoDur back in, but at a low dose. 200 mgx2 (blood level probably around 5) At this dose I get an additive effect, and better long term control. One 200 mg tab is equivalent to a cup of Starbucks coffee, in terms of side effects. (normal brewed coffee approx 100 mg/cup of caffeine, Starbucks double that) Theophylline and caffeine are chemically similar and have similar side effects (but always use theophylline for asthma except in emergency) In addition to Serevent and TheoDur I use Vanceril DS and Intal. You didn’t mention any steroid inhalers. Asthma is now recognized to be an inflammatory disease; the main long-acting preventor med is inhaled steroids in most cases (Vanceril, Beconase, Azmacort, Flovent, Pulmicort). Inhaled steroids were introduced in 1977; prior to that theophylline was the main asthma drug for mild and moderate asthma. Your dose of theophylline, 800 mg/day, is a fairly high dose; would probably require tests to check the blood level; due to its side effects, its not used much at these high levels anymore. However theophylline is making a comeback at low levels, say 2×200 mg TheoDur/day, as a steroid sparing drug. It has been shown to reduce the need for inhaled steroids by a factor of 2 when administered at low levels. Ventolin (albuterol) and Maxair (pirbuterol) should work equally well as beta2-agonist bronchodilator inhalers, to be used as needed. Serevent is a long acting beta2-agonist bronchodilator, 2 pf x2. It also acts as a steroid sparing drug. However it doesn’t completely replace theophylline, since theo has mild anti-inflammatory properties in addition to being a long-acting bronchodilator, Serevent doesn’t. Allegra is safe replacement nonsedating antihistmine for Seldane. Zantac is an H2-antagonist that blocks acid production. http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic/fosinop.htm Monopril An ACE inhibitor. Didn’t notice significent drug interactions. My main comment is the lack of steroid inhalers. If you mean you are switching from theophylline to Serevent, you then haven’t listed any anti-inflammatory drug, ie steroid inhalers, and need to add one. If you dropped theo completely for Serevent, I recommend adding the theo back in at a lower dose, say 400 mg/day; continue Serevent, and add steroid inhaler at dose as needed. Another possibility, is rather than adding theophylline back in, add the new antileukotriene drug Singulair, a pill you take once/day.
